Does anything violates the laws of physics? Yes.. an EmDRIVE WILL.
Newtons Third Law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. But what violates it is a propulsion system in the EmDrive which is the reason for the controversy. It is developed by British researcher Roger Shawyer in the early 2000s.
Before getting into EmDrive, we can see how a propulsion system generates thrust. A propulsion system generates thrust by blasting propellant in one direction and thereby moving the craft in the opposite direction. For instance a rocket generates thrust by shooting super heated gas under high pressure to produce a kinetic energy greater than Earth's binding energy. This happens on the basis of Newtons Third Law, i.e. an action of shooting hot gas is the cause of the reaction, which is the thrust.
But what happens in an EmDrive (electro magnetic) is that instead of blasting propellant it radiates microwaves around a cone shaped chamber. There is no exhaust so that there doesn't appear anything that can generate the thrust. Apart from that NASA researchers found that the EmDrive which they tested produced a thrust of 1.2 milli newton force per kilowatt ina the lab.
According to Shawyer it can be used in spacecrafts and also power flying cars. Lets hope for a better future with flying cars...!
